The Nine Quotes of Caring Model (Y. Surahaya Mohd Yusof, 2025)

Description and Rationale

Model Description:

“The Nine Quotes of Caring” is a humanistic nursing model that highlights nine key dimensions of caring, each grounded in personal and professional values. The model reflects both the emotional depth and ethical commitment required in healthcare, aiming to support nurses in understanding care beyond technical duties. Each "CARE" represents a guiding principle that nurses can practice daily in various settings—clinical, academic, community, and personal.

This model recognizes caring not just as an action but as a series of intentional attitudes and decisions that affect how nurses think, relate, and respond. It brings together personal experience, emotional presence, and moral clarity, shaping a caring culture that is consistent and meaningful.

Rationale:

  1. Caring through Love in Learning

    • Rationale: Learning grounded in empathy leads to compassionate care. Nurses must not only gain knowledge but grow in kindness. Teaching and mentoring are strongest when delivered with understanding, especially in clinical teaching.

    • Implication: Promotes lifelong learning with heart and purpose.

  2. Caring through Intrinsic Trust

    • Rationale: Trust supports safe care. It cannot be forced—it must be built through time and consistency. It influences patient compliance, teamwork, and overall care outcomes.

    • Implication: Encourages professional integrity and authentic presence.

  3. Caring through Future Hope

    • Rationale: Hope sustains patients and families through illness and change. It motivates recovery, supports mental health, and connects care to meaning.

    • Implication: A nurse who brings hope helps others keep going even when outcomes are uncertain.

  4. Caring through Accountable Practice

    • Rationale: Responsibility and honesty form the foundation of safe nursing care. Mistakes are addressed, not hidden. Actions match values.

    • Implication: Reinforces ethical decision-making and professional standards.

  5. Caring through Sacrifice for Living

    • Rationale: True caring often requires giving time, energy, or comfort. While nurses must protect their own well-being, some level of giving is part of serving others.

    • Implication: Promotes a balance between dedication and personal boundaries.

  6. Caring through Tears in Challenge

    • Rationale: Nurses and patients face hardship. Rather than avoiding emotion, this touch values vulnerability and respect for difficult moments.

    • Implication: Strengthens emotional intelligence and reflective practice.

  7. Caring through True Pain

    • Rationale: Sitting with others in pain—without rushing to fix—is powerful. Pain, when witnessed respectfully, becomes a space for healing and connection.

    • Implication: Encourages empathy without overpromising or avoidance.

  8. Caring through Calm and Cool

    • Rationale: Calm leadership, especially during emergencies, provides structure and relief. Emotional steadiness reassures patients and supports team dynamics.

    • Implication: Supports clinical decision-making under stress.

  9. Caring through the Journey of Life

    • Rationale: Caring does not stop at discharge. A nurse’s presence through birth, illness, recovery, or death reflects continuity and respect for life as a whole.

    • Implication: Emphasises continuity of care and relational commitment.

Rationale & indication for the Model:

This model offers a structured personal framework for practicing compassionate care in both routine and complex nursing situations. It can be integrated into:

  • Nursing curriculum: To instill values-based education.

  • Clinical mentoring: As a reference for reflective discussion.

  • Leadership and management: To guide ethical and supportive team environments.

  • Community nursing: To build long-term trust with populations.

The model strengthens the emotional, ethical, and intellectual presence of nurses, encouraging them to go beyond tasks and embody the deeper meaning of care.

Describing the advantages and disadvantages of the Nine Touches of Caring Model

The Nine Core of Caring Model brings several advantages to nursing education and practice. It offers a structured yet flexible approach that helps nurses connect deeply with their roles, promoting emotional awareness, ethical responsibility, and human presence at all levels of care. By focusing on values such as trust, empathy, hope, and accountability, the model encourages reflection and improves patient-nurse relationships. It supports leadership development and helps build a caring culture within organizations. This model is also suitable for guiding nursing students, especially in shaping compassionate thinking during training. However, there are limitations to consider. The model is value-based, so its effectiveness depends on the user's self-awareness and emotional maturity, which may vary among individuals.
